english DEBATE
English Debate is a competition where two teams will deliver their arguments regarding the motion assigned using English. The motions on Preliminary Rounds and Elimination Rounds will raise the theme of various issues such as social politics, law, culture, and environment. The Asian Parliamentary System will administer the competition with a maximum of 100 teams (both senior high school and varsity) representing various institutions nationwide. The purpose of this competition is to develop critical and analytical thoughts through arguments on various issues and deliver them in a logical manner with English as the medium. In addition, this competition also aims to grow not only the confidence of the participants in giving their opinions in front of the public with systematic and correct linguistics but also to raise the spirit to compete supportively. Each senior high school and university is allowed to send a maximum of 3 (three) teams, with the third team being put on the waiting list.

E-comp model United Nations
E-MUN is a simulation of the United Nations (UN) conferences in which every delegate will represent one country of the UN member to defend the interests of that country which aims to sharpen the ability to speak and negotiate while increasing the confidence of the participants in delivering their opinions and aspirations in front of many people. This year, in ALSA E-Comp 2023 there will be the United Nations Economic and Social Council (“ECOSOC”) with the theme of “Addressing Best Practice Technology & Innovation to Develop Smart Communities”, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (“UNHCR”) with the theme of “Ending Internally Displaced People and Statelessness through Sustainable Development” and the Disarmament and International Security Committee (“DISEC”) with the theme of “Upholding The Principle of Non-Intervention: Preventing Cyberterrorism and Electoral Manipulation”.

| ECOSOC | The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) was established according to the Chapter X of the Charter of the United Nations (1945) as a founding body and one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN). The mandate of the council is to serve as the primary body in regard to the discussion of policy within the scope of economic, social, cultural, educational, and health-related topics. ECOSOC also advises, coordinates, and leads discussions among the Member States and the UN entities on matters within its mandates |
| UNHCR | The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is the United Nations (UN) agency whose purpose is to protect the welfare and rights of refugees. This council was first established in 1950 as there was a high number of displaced Europeans after World War II. However, the General Assembly prolong UNHCR’s mandate indefinitely in 2003. Most of the council’s resources are allocated to address the needs of refugees and internally displaced persons. UNHCR also assists the returnees, those who are willing to return to their states of origin. |
| DISEC |
The United Nations Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) was the first of the Main Committees in the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, which is often referred to as the First Committee. DISEC was established in 1945 as a response to the need for an international forum to discuss peace and security among the members of the international community. The UN Charter stated that the purpose of DISEC is to establish general principles of cooperation to maintain international peace and security and gives recommendations in regard to such principles to the Member States or the Security Council. |
NEWSCASTING
Newscasting is an individual competition where the participants will simulate delivering news as Professional anchors on television. This competition has 3 (three) rounds with different content on each round (News Reading and Weather Forecast in Preliminary Round, Live Report in Semifinal Round, and Talk Show in Final Round). The objectives of this competition are to develop the participants’ English skills and to explore their interests in becoming professional news anchors.

PAPER PRESENTATION
Paper Presentation is an individual competition where each participant is required to create a paper (essay) in English about a given theme and present it with a presentation (PowerPoint) in front of the judges. The presentation must be interesting, creative and deliver the participants’ ideas within the time limit determined. The purposes of this competition are to enhance participants’ ability to write papers in English, as well to develop the participants’ ability, creativity to make, deliver their presentations, and to build the confidence to deliver ideas to the public.

SHORT STORY WRITING
Short Story Writing is an individual competition where participants will be given a paragraph with a specific theme and the participants must continue the paragraph and create a short story. This competition has 2 (two) rounds with different duration given for writing in each round. All participants can only submit 1 (one) short story during the open submission period for the preliminary that will be open for 1 (one) week. The participants who will continue to the final round will be given 3 (three) hours to write the story. The objectives of this competition are to enhance and develop the participants’ English skills and to explore their interests in story writing.

STORYTELLING
Storytelling is an individual competition in which participants tell a story in English in their own unique style. Participants are given 10 (ten) minutes to perform. To make their stories more interesting, participants may use costumes, pictures, visual aids, and other supporting materials. The competition’s scoring criteria are Matter (grammar, vocabulary, story interpretation, and pronunciation) and Performance (interaction, intonation, and time punctuality). The purpose of holding the Storytelling competition is to train the ability to speak and tell stories in front of the public, train the participants’ creativity and expressive skills, and increase awareness of the issues in the theme presented. This branch of the competition is open to high school students (high school) and college students (varsity). This year, the Storytelling competition branch will be held offline.

SPELLING BEE
Spelling Bee is an individual competition of spelling English words in a quick and accurate manner. In this competition, participants must precisely spell the English words spoken by the pronouncer. The words will be taken from the Merriam-Webster Dictionary. The participant who is able to spell the most words correctly in the shortest amount of time will be the winner. This competition aims to develop participants’ attentiveness in listening to and accuracy in spelling English words, as well as to expand their vocabularies and improve their competence in writing and pronouncing English words.

SPEECH
Speech is an individual competition where the participants deliver their own speech, based on chosen themes given by the committee. The judging aspects will be mounted to speech substance, grammar, pronunciation, time management and delivery of the speech itself. This competition aims to provide an opportunity for participants to improve their public speaking skills, as well as to encourage individuals to conduct in-depth study on their selected topics to create a thorough understanding of the issue.
